LOCAL ELECTIONS

On Behalf of WEA’s More Conservative Members #10 How to Become Part of Your Local’s Endorsement Process LOCAL ELECTIONS 4.28.20 If you wish to become part of your union’s local endorsement process, one of the routine activities you should be sure to participate in is elections. There are two things you can do to become a meaningful part of your local’s elections. 1] You can become a candidate for an office in the local’s elections: Don’t expect to start with the office of president. You will need to build your name familiarity and history in the union before you do that. Start by standing for the office of Building Representative (Bld. Rep.). These are the folks who go to the Representative Council (Rep. Council) meetings and represent your school. If you get elected, make sure you attend every meeting you possibly can. That helps build both name familiarity and a history of your work. If you do not get elected, try again next year. In the meantime, look for ways to help the teachers in your building become better professionals and/or get answers to their questions and concerns. 2] You can talk to the candidates to find which ones are likely to support one or more of the issues you deem important: If becoming a Bld.Rep. doesn’t appeal to you, at least visit with all of the candidates who are running. You are looking for the one or two whose principles and concerns most closely match your own. In this way, you might help swing the nature of your representation toward something more consistent with your concerns. And remember, you do not have to cast a vote for all of the openings. If there are five Bld. Rep. positions and you can only find two who meet your criteria; vote for those two and the other three slots blank. That way you support only those candidates whose principles you like. Based upon my 50 years with NSEA/WEA/NEA, I believe local elections are usually very fairly run. There will, from time to time, be errors. I should know, because I made one. But it wasn’t an intentional effort to manipulate the outcome. If you wish to learn more about local elections, feel free to respond to these postings. I'll do anything I can to help you better understand the process. ------------ Ken Mortland is a member of WEA-Retired, continuing a long career of activism in WEA/NEA.
