Another Crossroads in my Political Action Journey

On Behalf of WEA’s More Conservative Members #2 Why I’ve Decided to Support Kim Wyman, Despite WEA’s Failure to Endorse Her for a Third Time. 4.8.20 The recent decision of WEA’s PAC Board not to endorse Kim Wyman for re-election as WA’s Secretary of State has led me to another crossroads in my political action journey. The decision is surprising, since WEA had endorsed Wyman in 2012 & 2016. As an active member of WEA’s political action efforts for the last 48 years and a member of Mainstream Republicans of WA for over 30 years, you might think I’d be used to such developments. But this one took me by surprise and is a serious mistake. As professionals, WEA members understand the need to be qualified for a job and the importance of experience. We are held to specific and rigorous certification requirements /qualifications and we are expected to use our experience to lead and be mentors to our rookies. So, we should understand the need for candidates for political office to have the training and experience that the office demands. However, this particular vote does not reflect that understanding. Wyman’s opponent may be a good legislator with experience from her service on the Port Commission, but she lacks training and experience in running elections that a candidate for Secretary of State should have. Kim Wyman holds a masters degree in public administration from Troy State University, is a WA State Certified Elections Administrator, and is a Certified Elections and Registration Administrator (CERA) from Auburn University. City University awarded Wyman an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership in 2015. In addition, she has 20+ years experience, running elections; twelve of them as Thurston County Auditor and eight of them as WA Secretary of State. I value her training and experience and there is no one in Washington better qualified to be our next Secretary of State. For those reasons and more, which I will share with you during the coming months, I will be voting for Kim Wyman for Secretary of State this November. ------------ Ken Mortland is a member of WEA-Retired, continuing a long career of activism in WEA/NEA. (Article I, Section 8, Clause 7). -Under the Tenth Amendment to the US Constitution, election protocols are the responsibility of the States, subject to the US Constitution. (The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.) It is, therefore, my opinion that the recent actions taken by Pres. Trump’s recently appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy constitute a double assault on the US Constitution. Furthermore, the timing and targeting of mail sorting and delivery capabilities are clearly intended to disrupt the upcoming General Election and set the scene for a refusal by Pres. Trump to honor the results of the election, should he be defeated.

Could This Be the Beginning of a Trend? #15 The Righteous US v. The Evil Them 7.8.20 There’s a great line, spoken by Ben Franklin, in the stage play/movie “1776”. I’m paraphrasing here, but it goes something like this…. “Revolution in the first person, our revolution, is always good. It’s only bad in the third person, their revolution.” As I look at the text of President Trump’s Mt. Rushmore speech, I see this concept in the form of an effort to emphasize an “US v. Them” scenario. On the Fourth of July, I would imagine a speech would emphasize the “WE”, but that does not seem to be the case. For example: "Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children." To start with, I’m struck by the scenario of “our nation”, not theirs; the “our history”, not theirs; “our heroes”, not theirs; “our values”, not theirs; and “our children”, not theirs.
