That Report Will Never See the Light of Day

Controlling the Message #1 Sandia National Laboratories & Center for Disease Control 5.9.20 I wonder how many of my readers remember the “Nation at Risk” and a followup report, commissioned by the H. W. Bush administration and produced by the Sandia National Laboratories. Given the task of producing a scientific and mathematical report that supported the Bush Administration’s “Nation at Risk” Report, the study produced by the Sandia Laboratories found quite a different story. When word got out that the report was contradictory to the Executive Branch’s conclusions and proposals, the scramble to minimize the damage began. It was the first time I’d ever read the word ‘refereeing’ in regard to modifying a written document. When ‘refereeing’ failed to produce enough change, the report was buried. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending upon your perspective, much of the report had already come out in journals and gatherings of professionals. Kind of like shutting the barn door after all the horses got away. And here we are today, with another Republican president trying to bury a government report because it doesn’t help his agenda. The report in question is the CDC’s “Guidance for Implementing the Opening of America Again” Framework. “The guidance contained detailed advice for making site-specific decisions related to reopening schools, restaurants, summer camps, churches, day care centers and other institutions. It had been widely shared within the CDC and included detailed “decision trees,” flow charts to be used by local officials to think through different scenarios.” The report was supposed to be published last Friday, but agency scientists were told the guidance “would never see the light of day,” according to a CDC official. It’s interesting to me that this same phrase was used to inform Sandia Laboratory scientists about the fate of their report. Between now and Nov. 3, 2020, it seems critical that American voters to learn how often this process is being used to ensure a political agenda is not derailed by publicly available scientific research. By way of full disclosure, I am a life long Republican. https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/ap-exclusive-admin-shelves-cdc-guide-to-reopening-country/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=article_inset_1.1&fbclid=IwAR0RfPMB64AVLGfmhE1fEbLAHMtCbDgu4VBXlNhTakfNOW36mR0X4rio5oE
